SEOUL(TKS) — Jang Dong-hyuk, chairman of South Korea’s conservative opposition People Power Party (PPP), has called for the annulment of the June 3 nationwide local elections, arguing that widespread procedural failures and alleged irregularities rendered the election invalid.

Speaking at a press conference before attending the first hearing of an election petition at the National Election Commission (NEC) headquarters in Gwacheon on Monday, Jang declared that “the June 3 local elections are null and void” and urged the NEC to organize a new vote.

“The facts that have already come to light are sufficient to conclude that this election is invalid,” Jang said. “The National Election Commission should acknowledge its failures before the Korean people and promptly hold a new election.”

Jang’s remarks mark one of the strongest challenges yet to the legitimacy of this year’s local elections by a senior opposition leader.

Allegations of Systemic Election Failures

Jang pointed to a series of operational problems reported on Election Day, including shortages of ballots at polling stations, temporary suspensions of voting, and alleged flaws in the election management system.

He argued that if voter turnout figures could be manipulated through administrative or computerized processes, the possibility of tampering with vote counts could not simply be dismissed.

“The integrity of the entire electoral process has been compromised,” Jang said. “Unless the Election Commission can fully explain these irregularities, the public has every reason to question the credibility of the election.”

He also cited reports of improperly managed ballot transportation, inadequate sealing and storage procedures, and voting that allegedly continued after exit polls had been released.

According to Jang, these issues collectively undermined public confidence in the election and justified conducting a new nationwide vote.

Legal Challenge Underway

The chairman made his comments immediately before participating in the first oral hearing of an election petition challenging the validity of the June 3 elections.

South Korean law allows election results to be contested through election litigation and petitions when significant legal or procedural violations are alleged. The court will ultimately determine whether any irregularities were serious enough to affect the validity of the election.

The National Election Commission has not accepted Jang’s allegations and has maintained that election-related disputes should be resolved through the judicial process.

Political Implications

Jang’s demand for a new election is expected to intensify political tensions between the governing Democratic Party and the opposition People Power Party while placing additional scrutiny on South Korea’s election administration.
